The Aral Sea

A photo reportage from August 2010 – Southeast Kazakhstan, Northern Aral Sea. This collection explores what used to be the former shoreline of a once vast sea, now almost completely dried. This is the stark legacy of Soviet-era hydro-technical constructions and devastating river diversions. In the years since this reportage, the Northern Aral Sea has seen a remarkable, albeit partial, recovery due to preservation efforts. However, the larger southern portion continues its relentless shrinkage, transforming into a vast, toxic desert.
